DL room

If you have taken the campus tour, then you have heard of the DL (distance learning) rooms. Professors will ask you to do different set ups. For example, “I want to see my self on this screen, and I want to see Manhattan on the other. Plus, the Doc camera and the PC.” Sure you can help the professor, but you will be unable accommodate to all their requests. With the example above the professor requested 4 sources; however, DL rooms can only display no more than 2 sources.

Main Source

ControlsYour main source will be located at the top of the touch panel Figure 1.2. On the main source, we typically set it to front or rear camera, reason being is so the Professor is seen or viewing the class. There are exceptions however, if you need to display two different images at the same time. Depending on what you need for your class, you are free to change the settings. Let’s go over the different views on the main source. Reminder: the views here will be the same for the secondary source.First we have the Front cam. The front cam will give you the view of the front of the class. When you select this option, a display similar to Figure 1.3 will appear. This option will allow you to pan the camera to the left/right, up/down, and finally to zoom in/out. Next there is the Rear Camera. The Rear camera shows the view of the teacher station. Just like when the front is selected, a diagram shown in Figure 1.4 will appear giving you the same control options of that camera for adjustments.

Presentation Source

This selection is normally used for the PC, Laptop, or Doc cam. Before i explain the options for the Presentation (Secondary) source I want to clarify the difference between the Presentation & Main source. In the previous chapter, we learned the main source is located at the top of the screen. For the Presentation source, it is different. When you press VTC Presentation, the screen will display your presentation source just like Figure 1.5. Once there you can change the secondary view from your touch panel. In the previous chapter we already reviewed the front and rear camera options. Selecting those two channels will perform the same function as if you selected it in the main source. PC allows the instructor to show the PC display. For the laptop option, bring your laptop and plug in the loose VGA cable into your laptop. Once done, you can stream the images from your laptop to your class. Doc Cam is a little bit tricky. If you press Doc Cam & still can’t view the source then the unit is powered off. Behind the Doc Cam station next to the power supply is an on/off switch. Once powered on the stations overhead lamps will power on. Blu-Ray option allows the instructor to play Blu-ray movies or documentaries for their class.

Connecting a Call

Every time you enter a DL classroom, you should already be connected to the other campus. Occasionally you may have disconnections or temporary power outages. If you’re in the middle of class and the call is dropped, look on the left side of the touch panel. There is a tab marked VTC Speed Dial. Hit it and two columns of tabs will open up, 5 tabs marked Old Westbury & the other 5 marked Manhattan. By hitting the other campus DL button will instantly connect you to the room. To manually dial a location, press the “Dial” button on the left side. Enter in the IP you wish to connect to. Use the ‘*’ for the ‘.’ in the IP address. When finished entering the IP address tap the dial button. The system should now dial the call, if the other end is not set to auto answer someone on the receiving end will need to accept the call.
